Time is on my mind and on my side. Maybe because it’s winter, a time for reflection during cold, grey days. Maybe because I am thinking about packing for my upcoming beach vacation. Maybe because I was just quoted in Entrepreneur on the best time to ask for a raise. I am not alone with this preoccupation. Time, after all, is on everyone’s mind because we are human. Period.
Time and time again, our species has escaped existential threats by reinventing ourselves, finding new skills not coded in our genes to survive new challenges not previously encountered. ~ David Grinspoon
As you know, Expressive Age is a time in life and the way you express it. The way you choose to express this time in your life is a new challenge requiring new skills. Timing is also part of this challenge because “when” matters. In January 2018, Daniel Pink published a bestseller When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing. He looks at the timing of events and their outcome and how time runs throughout our days and lives. It’s a practical book in bringing attention to our chronotype and how we can harness this in our career and other interests.
Across continents and time zones, as predictable as the ocean tides, was the same daily oscillation — a peak, a trough, a rebound. ~ Daniel Pink
My interpretation is that when you pursue self-expression of your interests, you may be faced with times of peak activity, then a drop, and then a rebound. Acknowledging these rhythms can be freeing. Think about choreographer Martha Graham’s insight: “There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”
Yes, time is on mind and no surprise that I found “time” mentioned in over 283,194 lyrics by 93 artists, and 100 albums. (lyrics.com). I like to think that time is on our side at an Expressive Age!
Time is on my side, yes it is. ‘Cause I got the real love the kind that you need… The Rolling Stones
I also recommend a remarkable, lyrical book related to experiencing time. Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life by Yiyun Li.
